The Society of American Florists (SAF) recently recapped an article I wrote for Entrepreneur where I revered the NFL for incredible fan engagement. In fact, there’s a lot entrepreneurs can learn from some of these plays! Although this was especially important to florists in the SAF, you can tweak these NFL lessons for any type of small business you may own or manage.

To me, there are three key takeaway lessons from the NFL’s campaigns. For starters, make sure your product is accessible to fans. Around the globe, if you have access to the Internet, you can watch an NFL game on Sundays. That accessibility didn’t come easily. Make sure your customers can easily shop at your online store on any device and that there are great photos, descriptions, and clear prices.

Next up, make sure your “fans” are encouraged to be on your team. They should feel integral to your success—because they are. From customer of the month campaigns to VIP statuses, it’s actually pretty easy (and fun!) to welcome customers on board. Finally, make sure you stay fresh (along with your flowers!). Think of ways to keep things exciting, just like in any relationship. Whether it’s changing up menus, window displays, or offering a new annual event, keep things spicy.
